Blue Spring Kennel

Blue Spring Kennel is a traditional dog boarding kennel at 14200 Meadow Creek Lane in Waldorf, Maryland, that focuses on sighthounds and small dogs. Greyhounds, whippets, borzoi and Italian greyhounds are its specialty, and toy breeds get a space of their own. Boarding costs $20 per night.

What makes this kennel different?

The kennel is set up to keep dogs with others like them. Kennel areas are separated by breed and size, so the small dogs aren't housed next to the larger hounds. The owners say they want boarding to feel like an easy change from home, and the setup reflects that. The greyhounds get room to stretch out and stay away from the noise of the smaller dogs.

Dogs from the same household can share a suite. That helps siblings who don't settle well apart. Every dog gets clean blankets and pillows each day, along with raised feeders and a comfortable run. Oral care is added to the drinking water.

What amenities and services are offered?

• Climate-controlled building with 24/7 supervision
• Large outdoor play yards with covered areas and pools
• Medication given to dogs that need it
• Grooming available
• A 6-foot privacy fence

The pools and covered yard areas are a nice touch for lean, short-coated breeds that feel heat and wet weather more than most dogs.

What should owners know before booking?

Reservations are made by phone at 301-705-7704. Questions can also go to pat@bluespringkennel.com. Every boarding dog must have current vaccinations, so it's worth calling ahead to confirm exactly what records to bring. Extra feedings come at no additional charge, which helps if your dog normally eats several small meals a day.

If you own a sighthound or a small dog in the Waldorf area, Blue Spring Kennel is built for your kind of dog, and its prices are easy to plan around.
