Shady Spring Pet Retreat

About Shady Spring Pet Retreat

Shady Spring Pet Retreat handles dog boarding in Woodbine, MD, on a 17-acre country property in Carroll County, and it also lodges cats and exotic pets. The business has run at 1001 Hoods Mill Road since 1954, when it opened as Shady Spring Boarding Kennel, and took its current name in 2014.

What the accommodations are like

Each pet gets its own indoor/outdoor kennel, 20 feet long and three to six feet wide. The indoor side works as the bedroom, with bedding, blankets, cuddle beds and mats. The outdoor half is a 15-foot covered run where a dog can stretch out, go potty and see the neighbors through the fencing between rooms. Staff assign kennels by size, weight, sex and height, and clean up after eliminations several times a day. Every kennel area is heated in winter and air conditioned in summer, with staff checking temperatures throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the kennel before I book?

Tours are offered Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and no appointment is needed. Pets can't come along on the tour, since only registered guests are allowed in the kennel. There are no tours on Sundays.

What does a boarding room actually look like?

Every pet has a private indoor/outdoor kennel that is 20 feet long and three to six feet wide. The indoor portion is the sleeping area with bedding, blankets, cuddle beds and mats, and the outdoor portion is a covered 15-foot run.

Are the kennels heated and air conditioned?

Yes. All kennel areas are temperature-controlled, heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer, and staff monitor and adjust temperatures as needed. The kennels are indoor spaces, which also shields pets from rain, snow, wind and thunder.

How much does dog boarding cost?

Do they board cats and exotic pets?

Yes. Cat lodging is $35 per night for a condo stay with a wellness check, or $48 per night with cuddle time added. Exotic and caged pets, including chinchillas, ferrets, rabbits, bearded dragons, snakes and some birds, board at $35 per cage and need to arrive with their own enclosure, lighting, heating and food.

What are the office hours for drop-off and pickup?
