More Dog Than Human

More Dog Than Human is a family-operated dog training business in Kansas City, Missouri, that also offers in-home dog boarding. Dogs stay overnight in the trainers' own home with 24-hour care instead of a commercial kennel building. Boarding costs $40 per night.

What is boarding like here?

Because dogs board in a home, the setting is closer to a family household than a large facility. The owners describe a guest dog as becoming part of their pack for the length of the stay. Supervision runs around the clock, and all time in the play yards is supervised.

• In-home overnight boarding with 24-hour care
• Group and solo play yards with supervised outdoor time
• Double-gate safety system, both inside and outside
• Board-and-train programs and a six private lesson course
• Obedience, behavior modification, and service dog training

How does the training approach work?

Training is the heart of this business. The team uses what it calls a balanced, full-spectrum approach that relies on patience and repetition rather than treats. They work with dogs in small batches so each one gets more individual attention. Programs cover basic obedience, behavior modification, off-leash work, and service dog training.

The board-and-train option lets a dog stay and learn at the same time. Owners are brought into the process too, since the goal is for the whole family to understand the commands. For dogs that don't need an overnight stay, there is a six private lesson course.

Who is it a good fit for?

It suits Kansas City owners who want something quieter than a big kennel, especially if they'd like training built into the stay. Dogs that do better with a small group and a steady routine may settle in well. The double-gate setup inside and outside adds a layer of protection for dogs that tend to slip out.
