Happy Puppy Kingdom offers cage-free dog daycare and dog boarding in Honolulu, at 1419 Kalakaua Ave. Small and medium dogs spend the day roaming free rather than waiting in runs, and the building has a separate area set aside for overnight guests.

What a day looks like

The play space is themed like a living room, with cozy spots to settle instead of rows of crates. Dogs get breakfast and/or lunch, playtime, and a nap in the middle of it. Staff take care of teeth cleaning, paw cleaning, and coat brushing every day. Video updates go up on Instagram daily, so owners can see how things went without calling in. Boarding guests also head out for a 20-minute walk in the park.

Who it suits

The size limit and the free-roaming setup point to a particular kind of dog: one that likes company and does better loose in a room than behind a gate. Owners of larger breeds will need to look elsewhere in Honolulu. Daycare and boarding run out of the same building on the same routine, so a dog that already comes during the week lands somewhere familiar on an overnight stay.

Happy Puppy Kingdom takes small and medium dogs and caps the group at 35. Hours are 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM Monday through Friday, and 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday. The facility is closed Sunday. Published rates range from $30 to $65 per day depending on the service.
